AI for law firms

Can AI summarise contracts and case files?

Yes, as a first draft for a lawyer to check. Set up with your firm’s summary templates, ChatGPT reads a contract or case file the lawyer provides and drafts a key-terms summary with clause references, or a chronology of events with document references. The lawyer checks each point against the source, because AI summaries can miss clauses or invent details. Start with synthetic or anonymised documents until the firm has approved its product configuration for client material. AI does not give legal advice or replace the lawyer’s reading of the document.

A worked example

Instruction (synthetic contract)

Summarise this distribution agreement using our template KT-01. List clause numbers. Flag anything that differs from our standard distributor positions.
Summary drafted by AI
Parties: Sample Supplier FZ-LLC and Sample Distributor LLC (cl. 1)
Territory: UAE, exclusive (cl. 3.1)
Term: 3 years, renews automatically for 1 year unless 90 days' notice (cl. 14.1)
Minimum purchase: quarterly targets in Schedule 2 (cl. 5.2)
Termination: supplier may terminate if targets missed for 2 quarters (cl. 14.3)
Liability cap: fees paid in the previous 12 months (cl. 17.2)
Governing law and disputes: DIFC law, DIFC Courts (cl. 21)

Flags for review:
- Cl. 14.3 differs from our standard position (3 quarters).
- Schedule 2 not attached to the copy provided; targets not checked.

Synthetic contract for illustration. Not legal advice. Use live client documents only after the firm has approved the product configuration, access, retention and its duties to the client for that material. Pulling files from your document management system needs a separately configured and tested integration.

Why it matters for UAE firms

Associates often read and summarise long contracts and case files before a client meeting or a partner review, sometimes across English and Arabic documents. A summary in the same format every time, with clause and document references, makes the lawyer’s check faster and easier to follow. The time saved goes into the legal analysis, which stays with the lawyer.

Guardrails

  • A lawyer checks every summary against the source document. AI can leave out clauses, schedules or documents, or state a term that is not there, especially in long, scanned or poorly copied files.
  • Clause and document references are there so each point can be checked; they are not proof that the summary is complete.
  • Summaries describe the document. They do not interpret it, assess risk or give legal advice; that is the lawyer’s work.
  • Live client material is used only within the product configuration, access and retention the firm has approved, and in line with client instructions. A firm workspace alone is not a safety guarantee. See confidential client information.
  • Your document management system stays the record. AI does not read or file documents there unless a separate integration is built and tested.

Common questions

Can AI summarise a contract accurately?

It can draft a summary with clause references, which makes checking quicker. It can still miss or misstate terms, so a lawyer checks every point against the contract.

Can AI build a case chronology?

Yes. From the documents provided it drafts a dated chronology with a reference to each document. The lawyer checks dates, sequence and anything left out.

Can it summarise Arabic contracts?

It can draft an English working summary for internal use, which the lawyer checks against the Arabic original. Certified translation still goes to a legal translator.

Can we use real client documents?

Only after the firm has approved the product configuration, access and retention for that material, in line with client instructions. Start with synthetic or anonymised documents.
