Record the GPT creator, users, instructions, reference material, integrations and a few representative test prompts before migration.
OpenAI is planning to retire custom GPTs across ChatGPT plans and move reusable workflows toward plugins that combine instructions with connected apps. Businesses that built important internal processes inside custom GPTs should treat this as a migration project, not a cosmetic product change.

Businesses should treat custom GPT retirement as a workflow-migration task. Preserve the instructions, source material, owners, integrations, permissions and representative test cases behind every important GPT, then rebuild and re-test that operating logic in the supported plugin model rather than assuming the old wrapper will transfer automatically.

OpenAI says existing custom GPTs remain usable until the applicable retirement date, while a migration path will help creators move instructions and workflow logic into plugins. Plugins can combine reusable guidance with connected apps and tools.

OpenAI states that custom actions do not automatically transfer. Those integrations need explicit review and testing.
Migrated plugins begin private. Sharing, workspace policy, app permissions and user access need to be checked again.
OpenAI's current FAQ lists 25 September 2026 as the planned end of new custom-GPT creation for affected Enterprise workspaces and 11 December 2026 as scheduled retirement. Other plans are expected to follow a similar transition, but businesses should follow the notices for their own workspace rather than assume identical dates.
A business should preserve the method, sources, permissions, test cases and ownership behind a reusable workflow so it can survive product changes. This is exactly why implementation should be documented around operating logic rather than tied to one temporary ChatGPT object.
Use the market change only where it improves a real business workflow. Keep the implementation bounded, measurable and owned.
Record owner, users, instructions, files, integrations and representative prompts.
Preserve the business method and source-of-truth rules independently from the custom GPT object.
Check access, app connections, custom actions and approval paths after migration.
